Muted Strings
I was pleased when I learned that pizzicato and tremolo were added to the playback sound for strings, and that mutes had been added for trumpets. However, strings are capable of being muted and should have that capacity added. In addition, trombones can also be muted along with trumpets, but that feature has been left out.

It's not that the feature has been left out, it is just that the General MIDI standard does not define these sounds, so the freely available GM-compatible soundfonts that work with MsueScore do not provide them. If you find a soundfont that provides these sounds, then you are welcome to use that soundfont and to select those sounds from it.
BTW, not sure what you mean about pizz strings & muted trumpet being "added"; these features have in in MuseScore many years.

I've used MuseScore for many years since the 1.x days, and read the handbook when I first started. I do not remember any mention of these features, so I must have missed them in the documentation. That's why I thought they had only recently been added.

It was in the 1.x handbook too, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/change-and-adjust-sounds#Mid-staff-ch…
