Manual timings / 'Auto-correction'
I have spent 6 hours trying to write a score for a song that is in 5:4 and has a lot of off-beats, possibly triplets with rests in, but have had to discard every effort. MuseScore keeps adding rests and incorrect note lengths, deleting notes and pushing notes onto the next measure every time I alter something. Is there a way to stop MuseScore from trying to 'correct' what I am doing? I can make the note lengths fill the measure with a bit of counting. Better still, is there a way to record the timing, eg, by tapping the rhythm on the keyboard? Thanks

Could you upload a sample of what you mean, or perhaps describe a specific series of steps to reproduce the problem/ have you read the Note Entry section of the Handbook to understand how things are supposed to work? Be aware that, much like Sibelius, Musescore will always make sure there are the correct numbers of beats in the measure, so if you're used to finale's input system, it takes a little while to get used to.

Thanks for your reply, but I think I've got the hang of it better. What I meant is that if I want notes that are slightly before or after the beat, I shorten or lengthen them slightly. If I extend a note it shortens the next note, if I shorten a note MuseScore inserts a rest to fill any gaps created. What I am doing now is using slurs to extend notes a tiny bit at a time and if I want to shorten them I select the rest created, fill it with a note and slur it to the next note to fill the gap created. That seems to give complete control so I can experiment with notes that are slightly early or late. Then I merge together all the short, slurred notes into longer notes to make it neater.
I had a look to see if there is any other software than can record timings & apparently there's not, but I think that would be an excellent feature. I'll put it in the requests.

Sounds to me like you're talking about fine-tuning of the MIDI playback - that is, something that really should be notated just as quarter notes and eighths and so forth, but you want to playback slightly less rigidly. That isn't something you should normally try to do by adjusting the notation. Instead, leave the notation simple, but right click notes and adjust Note Properties and adjust the ontime and/or offtime offsets. Or, save the file as MIDI and use a program that's really geared toward editing MIDI. That's the "right" riway to do this - and by "right", I mean, the way most music software has always been designed to work.

Thanks for the advice, that sounds a lot neater! I'll give it a go.
