Two instruments sharing the same dynamic marking but only one is written

• Aug 11, 2020 - 03:20

How can I do this in musescore, where I only have to write one dynamic marking, but that dynamic played along 2 staves that are close to each other?

As you may also see attached, the 3rd Trombone and Tuba parts are on the same line, how can I play the top notes as trombone sounds and the Tuba part as a Tuba sound without have to make a separate Tuba line?

If you use one instrument with two staves, it becomes a little tricky. You must make this in version 3.5 or later. If you created it in an earlier version:
open the score
right click the staff
choose staff/part properties
click the "Change instruments" button on the left near the middle of the dialog box
Choose trombone (the same instrument)
fix your instrument names (do this last) then click OK

Now open the mixer (press F10) and click the arrow in the top left corner of the instruments volume box, this will expose the Trombone and the Trombone mute channel.
Select the Trombone Mute channel and change the sound to Tuba in the Sound drop down near the top left.
close the mixer (F10 will do this)

Now for the real trickery
put any text on or before the first tuba note in the score.
right click this text and choose staff text properties.
Click one of the voice 4 buttons and change the dropdown to its left to Mute
Click OK.
select the text and make it invisible by pressing v (unless it's a useful text you want visible anyway)

All tuba notes need to go into voice 4 or they will sound like a trombone. If you run into a situation where Trombone 3 and the tuba have one set of notes, you can either make voice 4 notes and rest invisible in this measures or just live with the extra notes in the score. This way you'll always get the tuba sound.

If you decide to keep your trombone staves as two instruments, these instructions will also work, but you could use voice 2 rather than voice 4 for the tuba if you want.

You missed setting up the trombone as a single instrument with 2 staves like I explained at first. You have to do this first so I added trombones set up the way. I left yours so you can see the differences. I also added text that says Tuba Sound to make the tuba sound like a tuba. You can make it invisible by pressing it and pressing v. I'll explain sfzp in my next post since it's not related.

You can create any dynamic mark you want and add it to the palette. What I usually do is add a dynamic to my score that's similar to the one I want to create. In this case I'd add "sfz"

Double click the sfz so it is in edit mode
move the cursor to the end of the sfz (since that's where you want the p)
press ctrl+shift+p to add a p to the dynamic
press ESC to exit edit mode

look in the inspector for the section that says "Dynamic"
under this label you will see a Velocity box and a Velocity change box.
Set velocity to 96 (which is the setting for f if you select it)
Set velocity change to -47 (you must use the minus sign for this dynamic to work), this will make the volume correct (49) for p after the initial sound.

To add any legal letter to a dynamic, press ctrl_shift+ the letter and it will be added as a dynamic. This works in all text not just dynamics text. You have to start with dynamics text have it affect playback volume.

To add this dynamic to your pallet select it by clicking on it then press and hold ctrl+shift and drag it to the palette. You can then use it like any palette that came with the program.

That is a bit vague a question. I'm guessing you mean you want 6 64th notes in the time of 4 which equals a 16th note duration. For this, set the duration to 16th note (press 3) then create a 6-tuplet (press ctrl+6). There are other options for the total duration so if you want something different, you'll have to ask more specific.

Using Add->Tuplet->Other you need to set the ratio for an 8th rest to 11 / 4. They hid the bracket and number which you can do from the little dialog box you'll use. You can then enter 7 32nd notes followed by an 8th note if my math is correct.

They should have used 64th notes rather than 32nd notes, but I've seen scores where 32nd are the smallest notes they'll use as in this case.

I have no problem helping with the "How do I notate this..." questions and I won't be surprised to see others answer your questions at times. I would ask that you move them to a new post rather than putting them in this unrelated thread. This will help others use search to find answers without having to read through several subjects.

I've never seen arrows on lines like that for a harp and MuseScore doesn't support this. The angles on the arrows make it at very best difficult using MuseScores built in capabilities. If you really want the lines, I suggest that you use a paint program to draw the lines with a transparent background and save the pictures as SVG. SVGs can be resized with good results if you don't get the sizes correct. You can then add the lines to your score by dragging and dropping the files where you want them. At least I think this is how you would do that. You could then use ctrl+shift and drag the pictures to a palette from your score if you plan on reusing the arrows but you have a lot of different arrows just in that picture.

I would use lines from the palette and forget the arrows myself.

Either manually change the font size and set the text to bold (or whatever style you want) or use the Style dropdown towards the bottom of the inspector and change the text to the same style as you are repeating. This makes it easier, but not automatic, to put System text, Tempos and Rehearsal marks at on the lower staff.

You cannot change from unpitched percussion to pitched percussion on the same staff, yet. I know someone is working on fixing this though.

You must make a work around. You need to put xylophone under the first percussion staff and tubular bells under the second staff. For the systems you want to see the staves, put something on the staff to force it to never be made invisible, I use a dot with the color set to white so you can only see it if you select it. You will have 6 percussion staves while you enter the notes. Enter all of the notes for all of these instruments. Next, in this case since you are not going to hide empty staves you need to do this for the first 2 percussion stave, the xylophone and tubular bells - Right click the staff, choose Staff/Part Properties, in the dialog set the dropdown for "Hide when empty" to "Always". You will now have only 4 percussion staves on each page if you follow my instructions.

You cannot have a treble or bass clef on a non-pitched instrument, but I believe the plan is to fix this as well.

Finally, I don't give private advice on how to use MuseScore to people I meet on the forums. I've had people contact me directly before and I deleted their emails. If there is a problem uploading a score, then we need to figure out why there is a problem because I've never seen it be impossible to upload a MuseScore file as long as the website is working correctly.

Good Evening,

I have completed the score, I have attached it below.

I need help with the 6 percussion lines to take down to 4 lines, I tried following the instructions as previously mentioned and I wasn't able to turn the 6 lines down to 4 lines. Would there be anyway that you could make the 6 lines down to 4 lines please?

I would greatly appreciate the help, and want to currently thank you for everything that you've done! You've been extremely helpful, and kind to me. So for that, I truly do appreciate the help.

I have decided that I want to give you credit in the description by leaving your MuseScore profile URL, for being extremely kind, and helpful. I truly do appreciate it, again thank you.

I realized there was a mistake in the score I will take the score down and reupload

The only way to do that is to use a single instrument with two staves. This has both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantage and disadvantage:
You can put a dynamic on one staff and it will affect both staves unless you change the Dynamic range in the inspector to Staff. The disadvantage is that if there are a lot of different dynamics, you have to change each dynamic's range.

Advantage:
You can make the instrument name look like your picture. The field for both long and short instrument names accepts returns in the box and all you have to do is make instrument names right aligned and you can easily make those labels. You can't do this with instrument names if you have two different instruments.

Disadvantage:
If you want only one instrument to play with a mute, but have notes in all instruments it's tricky but not impossible to make this happen.

A disadvantage to combining different instruments is always that it's at best tricky (as in this case) but may be impossible (for any woodwind) to make both instruments sound correct.

To add a staff to an existing instrument, press i to open the instruments dialog. Select Staff 1 under the instrument and click the "Add staff" button.
