playback disabled
For weeks I have been unable to use Musescore because the playback is disabled. Following the instructions in the Handbook under "How to restore sound if playback stops working," I tried options 1-6 with no success. The synthesizer option is disabled in the "View" menu. Nor do the I/O options under "Preferences" work. What can be done?

What OS (operating system)? What version MuseScore?

Windows 10. The most recent version of Musescore.

In Preferences/IO, you should have 3 or 4 entries in both API and Devices. You say no combination of those work?
Are you using Bluethooth headphones or speakers?
Is your playback device selected in Control Panel/Sound?

Yes, I am using Bluetooth headphones. Today I opened Musescore without turning on the headphones and the playback worked. I turned on the headphones and the playback still worked, but was not audible through the headphones, only through the computer’s built-in speakers. I closed Musescore and then reopened it. The playback was again disabled. In Preferences/IO, both API and Devices had become disabled again.

OK then. With your headphones turned on (MuseScore not open), go to Control Panel. One way to get there is to type "con" in the search box in the left side of the task bar. Control Panel should be at the top of the list. Select it. Once in Control Panel, select Sound(speaker icon). The pop-up will show playback devices. Your headphones should be listed, but may not be checked as the default device. Change them to default device. Open MuseScore and try to play a score. Normally, You would have to change things in I/O. But I've had times when I/O said Speakers were the output device even though I was using Bluetooth headphones.

The Bluetooth headphones have all the time been checked as the default device in the Control Panel. Most of the I/O options are disabled when the the playback is disabled.

Two additional options are mentioned there...
"In case of interference with other programs, esp. on Windows, go into your soundcard configuration from Control Panel and ensure that the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device in the Advanced tab of both Playback and Recording is unticked."

The toggle is disabled. See my comment above to bobjp about the soundcard configuration.

Interestingly enough, both my bluetooth entries have the red arrow. When I turn the headphones on, BOTH entries turn green.
