Did this work on the file when you tried it?
Not working for me, but maybe I'm not doing it right.

I can't read your file because it says its a new version. I am 3.2.3 as you indicate in your first reply but I am using linux
OS: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.2.3+dfsg1-4build1 (Ubuntu focal/amd64), MuseScore build number not set, revision: d2d863f

Oh, my first mistake, you have to dbl-clk on the icons. So when I dlb-click on the single eigth note, then all notes change to single eigth notes. So far so good. Then when I click on Auto it changes to as it was before, i.e. beams on the half note, not quarter note.

Select the measure press X

Thanks for your help so far. I'm learning a lot. When pressing X that moves the beam up, which is good, but the notes of the 2nd voice on beats 1 and 2 are joined. I think they should be separate, or am I wrong about that?

Select one or more notes and/or rests in the score and click the desired symbol in the Beam Properties palette (double-click in versions prior to 3.4).

Following the instructions in the link, I go to Time Signature Properties, click on the Also change shorter notes check box, and change the 1/8 row from 2 groups of 4 eighth notes to 4 groups of 2 eighth notes. I click OK and I see no change. :(

As mentioned, 3.6 is current, so definitely update, tons upon tons of bug fixes and improvements since then 3.2.3. Among them, no longer do you need to double-click to apply palette elements.
Anyhow, you have some incorrectly notated rhythms, it seems - like the eighth note on the last sixteenth of beat 1 on voice 2, that needs to be a sixteenth tied to another sixteenth. There's another like that at the end of beat 3.
You also have overrided a whole bunch of the beams to force the notes to not connected.
Probably best to start over with the beaming in this measure by selecting the measure then clicking the Auto button on the beam properties palette. This will restore everything to the defaults you have set up. Which, fwiw, are not standard - normally eighths should be beamed in groups of four. but if you are trying to reproduce the look of a historical edition from another era when eighths were more commonly grouped in twos, then that's fine.
