Two different tabs linked to the same staff

• May 1, 2021 - 15:57

Hi,

I created two different tablature staves linked to the same staff, to show two alternate fingerings of the same passage. But I realized that both tabs are also linked to each other, so that if I change the position of a note in one of the tabs, it also changes in the other, and I end with a duplicated tab.

Is there a way to have two different and independent tabs linked to the same staff?

If I am right, it is not posible, because "string" and "fret" are properties of note, and linked staff means same content, so once You set a "tablature position" it is saved into note, therefore you cannot have two differnt linked tablatures.
Sorry, for my english, I hope, it does make a sense.

You could achieve the required result by this process:

1) Complete the linked TAB
2) Add a non-linked TAB as a new instrument
3) Copy all of the first TAB to the second TAB
4) Adjust the fingerings in the second TAB

(Independent and linked sounds like a contradiction in terms)

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, I did that and it works, of course, as long as you don't change any notes in the music staff.

Well, it depends on how you understand the problem. In principle, nothing prevents two different tabs to be linked to the same staff. As far as I can see, linking is hierarchical and doesn't go both ways. But of course I understand if this is not possible the way MuseScore is programmed now.

So I'll go with your solution, making sure that I have the music in its final version before doing so.

Thanks all for your answers.

I think that linking does go both ways. Maybe it would be quite easily programmed to leave the default linking as 2-way but allow users to override instances with 1-way. As a guitar player I appreciate that your requirement is a useful one.

So, independent linking doesn't have to be a contradiction after all. :-)

"as long as you don't change any notes in the music staff"

I think, if You change it in one staff, it is not a big problem to change it also in second staff.

I would work this way:
Create two independent, but identical musics staves.
Add linked tab to each.

(It is probably possible to "pseudo-link" those music staves by plugin, so change in one would change notes in other one.)
