When at the site for plugins I have difficulty determining what exactly to download or in other words what they look like. I have tried to download tenor sax fingerings and guitar fretboard plugins as described in user manual and failed miserably.

And did you solved it meanwhile? It's not clear for me, at which step you're struggling.
For example for the fretboard plugin (be sure, that you're using a MuseScore 3.3 version or newer) it should work, if you extract the zip-file in the plugin folder of MuseScore.
