i followed your instructions. why am i only left with one 16th rest at the end instead of an 8th rest as shown in the previous picture?

Because several durations don't match the image from the initial post, check the 2nd, 8th and 12th note
The 6-let is 16th all the way

No, you're right. the triplet is 4, Ctrl+3

I get this:
Hmm, maybe that 6-let is covering only 10 16th, not 12, and then followed by 2 normal 16th (and then by the triplet)

My guess is that the 6 refers to something in the next stave (off the bottom of the picture).
