I/O settings

In the I/O settings tab in Preferences, the Device menu lacks the usual "Same as system" option.
Also, it does not say that Musescore needs to be closed and relaunched for changes to take effect.

"Same as system" should be the default already, and on most OS's it does update automatically. But there is a known issue on certain systems where the info isn't communicated correctly after a change in devices, and you do need to update this dialog. you don't need to close MuseScore for changes to take effect,t though. Often, simply pressing OK does the job, sometimes you might need to press the "Restart Audio and MIDI Devices" button. In many cases, you donm't even need to visit the dialog, simply toggling the MIDI button on the main toolbar accomplishes the update.

it would be nice indeed if somehow the libraries MuseScore uses to manage audio devices could detect changes automatically on all systems instead of just some. I know there is major re-architecting of the audio system going on for MuseScore 4, but I don't know if the new system will be more responsive to these changes or not.

I just found out that when the selected API is MME there is a "same as system" option for the device, it's called Microsoft Sound Mapper. This is not very obvious for beginners, though.
As for making the change effective when clicking on Apply and OK, it indeed seems to depend on the change. I have tried different device permutations and while some do become effetive, others don't. Pressing the "Restart Audio and MIDI Devices" button always works, thanks for the tip.

To be clear: I mean "same as system" already is the default before you even go to the dialog. Thsat is, there is no separate entry for it, because it's the default already. So beginners needn't worry about it - those options are only there for experts.

However, as noted, some systems don't communicate changes in the device in a way MuseScore can understand, so it can be necessary to work around that using the button.
