Notating speech as opposed to singing
So I'm trying to indicate that lyrics are spoken, not sung, but they still have note values. I was going to try ghost notes until I looked into them and it seems like people have problems with controlling what sounds they make (correct me if there is a way to have them just be silent). Then I tried just using rests, only to realize that lyrics mode doesn't seem to work with those! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? (also I tried looking up examples, because I remember it happening in like musical scripts? but nothing would come up and I can't remember exactly how they showed those)

"X" noteheads are the standard way. You can apply them using the Noteheads palette or the Inspector, and you can also use the Inspector to turn off playback. You can also change the sound for them using the instrument change element from the Text palette.

Is there a part of the handbook that explains these? I'm really not finding anything

For info on palettes, see the Palettes section. For info on the Inspector, see the Inspector section. But both are designed to be pretty straight forward. After entering or select a note you want to alter, just look through the Inspector until you find the notehead settings, and change to the type you want. Or to turn off sound for a selected or notes, just uncheck the Play box. To apply a palette item, select the element in your score you want to apply it to then click the desired palette item.
