keyboard shortcut for rests

• Mar 16, 2018 - 21:04

I think it would speed up keyboard entry significantly if there was a keyboard shortcut to change from note to rest entry. I find rests slow me down as I have to switch to the mouse and click the button to change to entering a rest. If this already exists, please let me know what the shortcut is, because I want to add it to my repertoire.

It's different, though. 0 is the shortcut to actually enter a rest. It's not the shortcut to merely toggle the Icon. There is no shortcut for that because that would be less efficient than actually entering the rest, so no one would ever use the shortcut to toggle the icon when they could actually enter the rest in a single action.

BTW, you shouldn't be needing tbeouse at all during note or rest entry. Everything is done more efficiently via shortcuts.

MuseScore is always in “replace” mode. If you want a note, just enter the note directly. You don’t different special commands to do this based on what is currently there or what was there previously. In note input odor, just type the letter name or click the staff, no special command required. In normal mode, just type the letter name.

Nobody wanting to toggle the mute icon on and off (or use mouse input at all, for that matter) is an incredibly arrogant and incorrect assumption. This shortcut used to toggle the icon in older versions, and I had a perfectly fine workflow using it. The new 0 behavior of overwriting the currently-selected note/rest with a rest of the selected length is extremely awkward because the user has to worry about which note/rest is selected before they can use it.

The closer-matching behavior is the right-click behavior to directly enter a rest of the selected length without entering rest mode, which you've recommended in a newer thread: https://musescore.org/en/node/340686 (I'm commenting here because this thread was returned higher up in web search results.)

Hmm, I think you might be confused, this thread isn't about muting at all. If you explain more about what you are trying to do, we can understand and assist better.

But for the record, the behavior of 0 has never changed - it always enters a rest. But you shouldn't need to "select" anything first - you simply enter the rest along with the notes, left to right, same as you read. None of this has changed since day one (well, many years ago the shortcut for rest was Space but it was changed to 0 back at MuseScore 1).
