How to set volume for individual chords?

• Feb 15, 2022 - 04:19

Hi,

I'd like to be able to set the playback volume of individual chords.
So for example in a 4/4 measure I want to have a loud chord on beat 1 and a quieter chord on beat 3.
Or, even better, since I'm a fiddler, a Loud-soft double shuffle-Loud-soft doubleshuffle pattern.

All I could find in the playback chord section in the manual was how to control the volume of all the chords en masse.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

You can copy the chord symbols to a blank staff and then use Tools > Realize Chord Symbols. Once the chords are notated, uncheck 'Play' in the Inspector for any chord symbols so that only the "realized" chords will sound.
To get the loud & soft on beats 1 & 3, you can right click on a note in a "realized" chord on beat 1, Select > More... > and check the boxes 'Same duration', 'Same staff', and 'Same beat'. With those chords selected, click on the accent in the Articulations palette to make beat 1 louder, and beat 3 will be softer by comparison.
(If the accent is not loud enough, as an alternative you can change the 'Velocity' settings in the Inspector.)

For swing or shuffle, see:

Here's your modified score:

Use Edit > Instruments and put a check in the 'Visible' box to see the realized piano chords staff.
Use Format > Style to see the swing set at 63%.

Thank you so much! This works fine for what I need :)
Including your mod to my score made it easy to understand your directions, much appreciated.

I was fairly close, I tried "realizing" the chord symbols, but didnt know to make the step of making a blank staff, so the realized symbols got mixed up with the melody notes since they were in the same staff.

I am a musescore guppy, much to learn! What a great tool!
Thanks for the handbook reference too. Now I have some more reading to do :)

Actually, thank you for attaching your score; and by that I mean the actual MuseScore (.mscz) file. You'd be surprised at how many people have had score playback or score layout issues and who don't attach anything; or they attach a 'picture' (e.g., a ."screenshot" .png or .pdf).which is completely useless for playback and often useless to determine which score layout parameters got screwed up.
Access to the genuine .mscz file saves time and allows support people to provide solutions targeted to your specific issue.
