Fermata: Can you add timing options when inserting a Fermata?

• Nov 9, 2019 - 04:22

The Fermata allows the conductor to hold a note as long as they wish. But, during playback of the compositon, it only plays the notation specified and there is no pause afterward. The next note is played in tempo.

It would be nice to have the options to add a specific hold time (longer than the note indicated) and a delay time before the next note (for playback purpose only) so composer could hear it as it might be performed.

Thanks.

If you select a fermata, you can open the inspector (press F8) and increase the time stretch from the default of 1. Only adjust one fermata and it will affect all instruments. If you adjust multiple fermatas on different duration notes you may not like the results. As for the pause afterward, a pause is common after a fermata, but not universal and subject to interpretation or tradition. You can put a caesura after the fermata (actually on the same note as a fermata) and adjust the pause for it. If you don't want to see it, select it and press v to make it invisible. Just as a fermata only needs one note's stretch adjusted, it is only necessary to put one caesura in a measure to affect all instruments.

Why is fermata in the "Articulation" palette and not in the "Breaths & Pauses" palette? Actually, "Breaths & Pauses" would seem to better be moved to the "Tempo" palette. Just a suggestion for possibly improved navigation.

FWIW, in the past, a fermata was internally implemented as an articulation, and it is often covered along with articulations in texts on music notation. So that's why it's there. But I agree it's more logical to have with breaths and pauses. I may well set up my own custom workspace that way, so thanks for the suggestion!

Marc, I'm new with Musescore and until I received your very prompt response, I wasnt aware that the pallettes were customizable. Thank you so much for this tidbi! I should also add that I'm really thrilled with the versitility, intuitiveness, and breadth of this software. After having used several composition programs over the past 20+ years, some priced at several hundred dollars, I soon realized that Musescore is by far the best, especially considering the dynamic user forums and the variety of plug-ins that are available.
