ABC import
I've been importing ABC to Musescore for months now (transcribing large MS). Suddenly it doesn't work, failing with the attached error message. The report is always the same - line 5, col 7.

Please share the ABC and the XML

The error occurs with all and any ABC. It looks as if the plugin is trying to read ABC as XML.

Hmm, I can confirm this, using the sample ABC from https://abcnotation.com/

This is a huge problem for me. I am always using the plugin. I get this message now.

And it is a known problem, see the issue above

I guess it's back to the old days of importing a MIDI file and going through the extra steps to clean it up.

Not at all. See my reply below. You can still convert ABC to MusicXML, you just need to download the program to do it while the online converter is down.

Or, as mentioned in the issue as well as in this topic, download that converter program and run it on your own machine.
If you use it often enough, then the small effort of setting up the program locally will definitely outweigh the effort of cleaning up MIDI files.
I'm not sure what's going with the online service the plugin relies on, but it's still possible to do run the conversion a little more manually. Go to https://wim.vree.org/svgParse/abc2xml.html to download the abc2xml converter program (available as a standalone program for WIndows, requires you to run within Python on other systems unfortunately), then use that to convert your ABC to MusicXML, then simply open that MusicXML file directly in MuseScore (no need for any plugin).
Hopefully the online service gets back up at some point though, it was nice and convenient.

I've downloaded abc2xml and unzipped all the files but when I try to run it the screen appears briefly before disappearing. Can anyone tell me what I need to do/what I'm doing wrong? (Running under Windows 11.)
Thanks in advance for any help. Totally agree with your hope for a functioning return of the online service Marc!

See https://musescore.org/en/project/abcimpex , this should ease the operating of these tools?
I've been using 'Easy ABC' which I downloaded form Sourceforge, https://sourceforge.net/projects/easyabc/ It's not perfect, but it converts ABC to XML, and I can't seem to get anything else to work! Stuart
I arrived here a couple of days ago. Now fixed it for me. Not pretty, not sophisticated but fixed enough. The attached document outlines my protocol. I make no assertions to it's safety, accuracy or security. I hope it helps.
