Baroque 13-course Lute Bass-courses.

• Jan 4, 2023 - 20:40

I have been trying for several days to write Bass courses 7 to 13 but to no avail. Am able to create French Tablature but, placing an 'a' on the sixth line and pressing the down arrow has no effect.

Was hoping that Version 4.0 was going to solve the problem. If anything it's worse because there is now no advice on how to set this up.

To fail like this, I suppose you have added the instrument Lute (Tablature) which, by default, is intended for a 6-course lute, hence the impossibility of entering the other courses. This is something to be aware of, I agree!

Instead, you have to choose the Tenor Lute instrument (13 courses). Once this is done, go to the Instruments panel and change the staff type (standard vs. French Tab) via the drop-down list.

Hello Gus,

First of all I really appreciate your help, I was able to reproduce the information in your GIF producing a French Tablature Score, even being able to insert an 'a' on the Sixth Line and then using the down arrow 7th to 13th notes. However, as soon as I moved on to the next note it reverted to a 6th. Any thoughts.

Barry.

The next note reverted to a 6th??
I confess that I have never observed this. You have seen on the GIF that it works well. It is not clear how you would achieve what you describe. Can you attach your score, and tell us where this happens (what measure?) and as a result of what intervention on your part?

Just to remove any fundamental problems, I'm using MuseScore 4.0.0 on an iMac with Ventura IOS 13.0
I am also very much a beginner/learner. The reason I'm trying to use your software is that my teacher, Sam Brown is to put it mildly very busy. So, I'm trying to create my own practice exercises (like a Primum Fundamentum) but my hand writing is awful!!

The two attachments show that a 'a///' is able to be put on the score, however as soon as another note is added it reverts to a 'a'. Hence my proble.

It's even more exasperating when a while ago it worked!!!

Thanks yet again for your help.

Ah, I think I understand now, it's the word "by clicking" that was the key. In a nutshell: it is not possible/intended to enter the notes/frets under the staff with the mouse.
You have to do it by typing a key on your keyboard, for example the letter "a", and even for the numbers 4, 5, 6.

Let's imagine that you have already entered the sixth course.
Now do: right arrow key -> down arrow key -> type "a": you get the "a" of the seventh course
And continue like this: right arrow key -> down arrow key -> type "a": you get "/a" (eighth course)
and so on.

Success... I think, but it's slightly different from your example. I have to go to the 6th course, do the appropriate number of slashes and then enter an 'a'. Then I can go 'right' for a new note.

I'll see how it goes‽‽

Thanks again and I'll now persist with MuseScore.
