"a tempo" marking????
Why after three versions is this still missing? For something so common to music composition I find it baffling that it's not been implemented. Can this be added please?

Adding a simple system text to the text palette is something every user can do.
The difficulty starts when such a text should have effect on the playback tempo
As a player I prefer to have the original tempo explicitly mentioned in the score - that saves me from remembering it...

It also avoids on ambiguity, which tempo should be returned to. e.g accel. followed by rit. followed by a tempo. Return to the tempo after the accel. ot before?

In an orchestra, the conductor determines the tempo.
"a tempo" is the way to go for orchestral scores.
Indicating metronome markings in orchestral parts will only lead to discussions between conductor and player(s)

I will not join the discussion about discipline within the orchestra, that would be completely off topic.
So the obvious workaround is to add whatever (textual) tempo marker you mean and edit the text from e.g. "Allegro" to "a tempo".
Keep in mind that the tempo marker is not only read by humans but also by the playback engine - when talking to machines unambiguous precision is king, there is no conductor to follow.
