Reading from other file formats

I have been using Music Works Personal for many years and their Version 4 Beta seems pretty good.

However, the program uses its own file format and midi files produced by Music Works do not look good in MuseScore.

Is there any way to convert Music Works files to .mxl files?

I also note that you mention trying midi as an exchange format. That is never going to be a good option as midi contains no notation information, just a list of instructions that give times start and stop playing notes of particular pitches. It can't differentiate between a staccato crotchet (quarter note) and a quaver (eighth note) as jt has no way of encoding note values or between a G# and an Ab as it has no way of encoding note names - just pitches, for example. Midi import applies some AI to guess what the notation might look like but it is rarely very successful.
