You'd change the color after having added it to a score, not before

Ok thank you.
My problem is that after I insert some notes in a score I want to color them based on their length. But when loop thru them from beginning some of the notes change.
For example I insert whole note but when I insert it the note splits into two half notes because is in the edge of the measure.
How do you navigate this.
