Soundfont not registering
I'm using M4 and trying to put in a soundfont, but it says .sf2 and .dls aren't readable files.

I'm not an expert in this area, but the Handbook claims that MS4 can handle .sf2 and .sf3 SoundFont files:

It's possible that this Handbook entry may provide some advice?

It sounds like the soundfont files are corrupted or incompatible. Soundfonts, especially free sets, are still something of a wild west.
Where are you getting the error message?

I have sf2 fonts loaded that work. There is a Soundfonts folder in your MU4 root folder. This is where you install your sf2 fonts. I've never had a problem. In that folder is the MS Basic font, also.
What operating system? Have you used any OTHER soundfont which did work? Can you locate the specific place & name of the '.dls' file?

I am using Windows. No, not that I have used. I couldn't locate it, and I used sf2 and dls files, but they didn't work

What are dls files?
Just wanted to add that I'm having the same issue. I've tried 6 soundfonts so far (all .sf2), and when I try to open them with MuseScore 4, I get a dialogue box that says "File [filename.sf2] is corrupted and cannot be opened." When I show details, it says "Unknown filetype."
More importantly, I've been able to install all of them successfully with MuseScore 3 and use them in a file, so I'm having a hard time believing it's something wrong with the fonts.

I had the same issue, and the way I fixed it is that instead of clicking on the file to open in musescore, I opened musescore and then dragged and dropped the file into it. Hope that helps!
