Volume

• Jun 28, 2023 - 20:15

Just got a new computer, and MuseScore is working fine, except there is no volume for playing a score. My computer's volume is working outside MuseScore. The volume is at maximum on playback. How do I turn on the volume? It was working fine on my old computer from which everything was transferred. Thanks so much.

You didn't even say which operating system you are using and which MuseScore version.
Show us the settings of "Preferences / I/O".
Restart the audio and midi devices there.
Check the sound mixer settings of your operating system.

My new computer is a MacBook Air, the newest version, which is OS Ventura 13.4.1. The volume is fine on everything outside of MuseScore. Here are photos of my MuseScore settings that show ample volume settings, but there is no sound at all, only in MuseScore. I'm using MuseScore version 2 where all of my scores are. The last time I downloaded an upgrade, my scores were not transferred to the upgrade, so I stuck with the version I'm used to, which works perfectly fine on both old and new computers, but with volume only on my old computer. What is "Preferences / I/O"? How do I restart "audio and midi devices there"? My sound is fine on my computer's operating system. The problem is only within MuseScore, and only on my new computer. Do you need any more information to help me? Thanks so much.

Did you click on this box I showed in my screenshot? Are there any selectable entries? Click also on the field called API. This is the selection of the correct driver for MuseScore to talk to you speakers. It doesn't matter if it is an internal or external speaker. I am sure, there must be an entry on both fields!
The red warning is only: after changing a setting there, you must close MuseScore and launch it again. Of course, any files you've worked on should be saved before.
Other programs may work because they had already a correct selection.

> How do I download a replacement sound font if the entry under Fluid is incorrect?
Press 'Add' in the synthesizer/Fluid window, you should find some soundfonts. If there is already "FluidR3Mono_Gm.sf3" I think that should work also but with 'Add' you can at least find "MuseScore_General.sf3". It is the default soundfont.

> The playback and mixer photos would not load because they somehow exceed the 4MB max size
Doesn't the Mac have a screenshot function? I'm sure it does! The result is much smaller files in PNG format. In fact, we can't see everything, for example, in your synthesizer window.

> Restarting concerns me that I'll lose content or revert to another version.
"Reset to Factory Settings" resets MuseScore settings, meaning you lose some custom settings you made in MuseScore, all the things you changed yourself in the preferences tabs; especially self-defined keyboard shortcuts can be a problem. Look at all the tabs and remember if you made any custom changes there. If so, make a note that you can set them again after restoring the factory settings. However, the "I/O" tab should remain as it is after the restore.
It may be that your "FluidR3Mono_Gm.sf3" is replaced with the default sound font, but then press "Add" and you can load FluidR3Mono_Gm.sf3 again. But this action also sets the "Preferences / I/O" settings to default and hopefully fixes your sound problem.

Finally, why are you using this old MuseScore version? My oldest version is 2.3.2, currently I work with 3.6.2 and a version 4.02 is also available. But version 4.x needs a powerful computer. You can have all versions installed side by side on your computer. Scores created with older versions can be opened with newer versions, but not vice versa!

I hope you could understand everything - I'm no native speaker ...

Thank you Jm6stringer for this info. Here is more on my end. I'm using MuseScore 2.1.0 (version 871c8ce, if that matters). Regarding the steps you provided:
1. My computer is a laptop, not attached to speakers. I'm using the computer's speakers, which work fine outside of MuseScore.
2. In the Synthesizer window under Fluid, it shows FluidR3Mono_Gm.sf3.
3. Restarting concerns me that I'll lose content or revert to another version.
4. How do I download a replacement sound font if the entry under Fluid is incorrect?
5. All of my sound drivers on the Mac are working fine. It's only within MuseScore that there is no sound.
6. In the "Preferences I/O" there is no Restart Audio and Midi Devices" option
7. N/A
8. No touch bar on my Mac, and nothing is on Mute
9. Please see in the conversation above a photo of my Preferences I/O page and tell me if there is anything that needs to be changed.
Thank you so much

I thought I had attached photos of my sound-related features in MuseScore to show that they're all on. Apparently they didn't load. I'll try again.
The playback and mixer photos would not load because they somehow exceed the 4MB max size. Don't know what to do about that. All the photos are the same, but the synthesizer page loaded. All volumes are up.

Your picture of the Synthesizer dialog is cut off.
You said that it shows FluidR3Mono_Gm.sf3, yes?
If it does, that's good. FluidR3Mono_Gm.sf3 is the default for MuseScore 2.1, so a synthesizer is available.

Look at the picture here:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/2/preferences#i-o
and you can see entries for API and Device.

Your other picture shows this:
IO_tab.png
Can you open the drop-down lists for both API and Device?
The drop-down arrow for 'Device' is cut off from your picture.
Can you click on it and make a selection?

If you cannot assign any API or any Device, try reverting to factory settings:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/2/revert-factory-settings

I clicked on API and it showed me Core Audio, which then gave me MacBook Air Microphone, which I applied. There is still no sound. Here are the screen shot photos that I hope you can see.

All, the last time I upgraded to a newer version, none of my scores were transferred to the new version. There are hundreds of them, which is why I stayed in 2.1.0 all these years with no troubles at all. If you can tell me how to do this seamlessly, I'm happy to hear about it. Then of course I'll have to relearn how to use it because I've seen it in a friend's computer, and things are different. Hopefully that's not as difficult as solving the sound problem, which I'll continue to work on. Thank you.

You don't have to "tranfer" scores from MsueScore 2 to 3 or to 4 - you simply open then directly. So, from any more recent version of MsueScore, File / Open, then simply select your old files. By default, MuseScore 4 looks in MuseScore4/Scores, whereas MuseScore 3 looks in MuseScore3/Scores, and of course MuseScore 2 looks in MuseScore2/Scores. But all you have to do is look "next door" in the file dialog to find the scores from the other folders. Or, if you prefer,r you can use your computer's file browser to copy scores from the old MuseScore2/Scores folder to the new one(s). That's not a bad idea, so you can work with the current version without fear of overwriting your original files.

Things do indeed look rather more modern now, and there are lots of new features, but the basic things about how you enter notes and markings into your score haven't changed since day one. Mostly, things just look and sound a ton better. Although if you've been going to great pains to make all sorts of manual adjustments to work around the deficiencies in 2.1, then you might find some of that work needs to be revisited. MuseScore 4 throws most of those adjustments away since almost none of them are needed anymore now that the defaults are so much better.

I looked through my Applications file and found a version 3. It seems that my files are there, though I don't know how it happened. Honestly, the last time I looked (when I first loaded it several years ago) they were not, and I asked about it then and was told that they don't. Perhaps my new MacBook doesn't recognize version 2. I have volume in version 3!!! I appreciate everyone's diligence in helping me solve this. I plan to move forward with version 3 until I get stuck on another issue, and MuseScore is always there to help. Thank you!!! Danke Schoen!!!

Actually, looking at your profile, I see it was already explained to you in https://musescore.org/en/node/305624 that MuseScore 2 files can be opened in 3; only the reverse isn't true (and similarly, MuseScore 4 files can't be opened in 3).

I can't see any reason to move from one obsolete version to another. Just go directly to the current version 4.0 (although actually, 4.1 comes out next week, so you'll want to update again right away).

Glad to hear you say thank you and then in German too :-).

If you are using version 3, check if it was also the last version (3.6.2). Otherwise you can find it here, at the bottom: https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/musescore-nightlies/macos/3x/stable/
I think it's worth to take the latest version.

One more tip I have: copy the files using the Finder from the folder ".../Musescore 2/Scores" into the folder ".../Musescore 3/Scores" before you edit them further. So there is still a backup copy available.
