I was encountering this strange behaviour as well. After various attemps it seems that dynamics play an important role in the behaviour of the col legno marking, it is either low dynamics are not playing or that soundfonts are completely missing.

What my problem was was that I didn’t have muse sounds (which is the only library by MuseScore that features this articulation) set for the violins. If this is not the issue in your case, consider creating a new topic.
