Mixer not loading any soundfonts, renders playback impossible
When I open any of my scores, the mixer doesn't appear to load any of the sound files, whether from Muse Hub, my VSTs, or my sf2 soundfonts. As a result, when I hit play, the marker remains set before the first bar and won't progress. This doesn't effect the editing of any score, only the playback.
I've tried the following measures to try and fix this:
- Double checked that the folders that MS4 was drawing on to get the sounds were correct
- Uninstalling and reinstalling MS4 (also running the repair option on reinstall)
- Rolling back to previous versions of MS4 (I am currently on 4.1.1, though no MS4 version worked)
- Uninstalling and reinstalling all Muse Sounds
- Uninstalling and reinstalling all VSTs
- Uninstalling and reinstalling all sf2 soundfonts
- Trying all methods simultaneously with full PC restart
None of the listed methods have done anything. Any ideas on what would fix this would be much appreciated.

Tell us about your system. Are you using any external audio devices? Disconnect them for now. MS Basic sounds should be in: C:>Program Files>MuseScore4>Sound. Reinstall seldom helps because uninstall doesn't get rid of everything. Everything needs to be installed to default locations. At least to start with. This could be why MU4 has never worked for you. If you are just trying to get MU4 to work at all, you don't need the hub. You should be able to get it to work with Basic sounds. Once that happens, then you can move on.

It's worked in the past, ever since 4.0 was released. It's only been in the past 3 days or so that something's gone awry. Unplugging everything didn't help either. MS Sounds are all in their default locations too.

Have you checked MuseSampler? In menu Diagnostic > MuseSampler > Check

Edit: in my case this post came to the rescue:

The sampler library was detected. Same 0.4.0 version in the screenshot you shared. The more I looked into the links you provided, the more I went down the rabbit hole of finding file folders and... I'm illiterate when it comes to going over files.

Did you have a look in the log file? On Win11 it is located in
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4\logs
Irrespective of litteracy you may get some info using the search terms "trying to open the audio end-point", "configure", "device successfully configured" and "MuseSampler".
Edit: make a minimal simple score and search for its log.

Was able to get this:
2023-09-16T01:52:24.971 | ERROR | main_thread | MuseSamplerLibHandler | MuseSamplerLibHandler: Unable to open MuseSampler library, path: C:/Users/[UserName]/AppData/Local\MuseSampler\lib\MuseSamplerCoreLib.dll

2023-09-16T01:52:48.471 | WARN | main_thread | MuseSamplerResolver | clearSources: Not supported!!
Other two search queries turned up nothing.

Check first if the MuseSamplerCoreLib.dll is in C:\Program Files\MuseScore 4\bin
I mentioned three other search terms.
"trying to open the audio end-point", "configure" and "device successfully configured"
Maybe you find new info.
Check also C:\ProgramData\MuseSampler. Open .config file. It must mention the correct location: e.g.
C:\ProgramData\MuseHub\Downloads\Instruments\

OK, first you say MU4 never worked. Then you say it's only been the last few days that have been a problem.
You still haven't told us about your system. And what did you disconnect. Whatever you do, do it before you stat MU4. For example if you plug in headphones after you start MU4, sound will stop working.

When did I ever say that?

I misunderstood. "Rolling back to previous versions of MS4 (I am currently on 4.1.1, though no MS4 version worked)." You meant versions you went back to.
Try to find this file using this path that you have (Diagnostics > System > Show Paths). Instead of "/" in Windows 10, I had "\/" marks in the file. You need to remove the extra "\" in the path, so it should be: "C:/Program Files/Common Files/VST3/Addictive Keys.vst3" (or whatever your plug-in is at the end of the path) INSTEAD OF THIS: "C: \/Program Files\/Common Files\/VST3\/Addictive Keys.vst3". I don't know why this kind of path was made in this file, but after these manipulations, it will recognize my VST3 plugins.
