Select the rest->Ctrl+L
Or insert another Voice that you will make silent and invisible to which you will add the lyrics.

Yes, thanks, I got that far, but i have to then enter all the rests to time with the lyrics and it takes a long time. Thought there might be another way.

Since there are no notes to which you can attach lyrics, why not use regular staff text and use spaces (and dashes) to create faux lyrics.
