Workspace Zoom Initialization Defect

• Jan 27, 2024 - 18:58

I use MuseScore 4.2.1 with a touch sensitive notebook in portrait mode as a reader while practicing piano. The view is continuous and vertical. Zoom is at 81% with no margins. I have saved a workspace called 'my new workspace' (which I think is identical to Default). When the app first loads with either of these two workspaces, the layout is not correct. The zoom is not set on initial load of the project file. If I close the score and reload it the score appears with wrong zoom. My workaround to correct the layout is to switch back/forth to the other workspace, as both workspaces when selected will position the page with the appropriate zoom.

Second issue: While practicing past the bottom staff I need to reveal the rest of the song by scrolling the page down. This requires placing my finger at bottom right side of pane and sliding the finger up to the top right corner. Slipping left or right reveals margins and hides content that I have to correct with my finger. Sometimes I inadvertently select a note or a bar that then shows a cursor highlight or worse changes the note which has me pressing undo. I would like a rehearsal mode where the score is readonly and instead of a playback toolbar there are big up/down scroll buttons that can position the page instantly without me fussing with the interface.

Comments

This may not be absolutely relevant, but on the side, be sure to have tried limiting the scroll area when in vertical mode and also maybe trying setting the default zoom level in the preferences if not yet having done so, as it might help your situation:

Yes, I have set Default Zoom to Page Width. When the score loads it is still wider than my screen in portrait mode. When I switch workspaces it properly zooms to 81%.

No, I have not set Scroll Pages to Vertical and limit scroll to page borders. This setting does prevent horizontal scrolling with my finger which is an improvement.

And I see now that the window's scrollbar is visible. A single finger click in this bar will reposition the page where my fingertip is located. This is not necessarily showing the next staff to be played so I end up losing my place in the song. I have switched to the left side of the screen away from the scrollbar when dragging my finger. I point at the last staff on the bottom and then slide my finger up to the top of the windowpane to make the staff first and then I don't lose my place in the score.

I have upgrade to 4.4.2 and now I see different behavior. My second issue above is moot as I've re-introduced page breaks back into the vertical layout and this provides a target for my finger to click and drag on the touchscreen to scroll the score up/down without inadvertently editing a component and making the modified '*' appear.

As for the first issue, now when I load a .mscz for the first time with the computer screen oriented as landscape, the horizontal layout of the score does not adjust to the restricted width of the view screen (and the bottom info bar's zoom widgets cannot be accessed as they are off screen). If I close the file and reload it a second time, the score is displayed zoomed properly within the screen's landscape orientation without me having to fuss with it.
