Adding extra stave

• May 5, 2024 - 19:33

I am trying to add a second tenor part to an SATB + Piano score.
For clarity, I want it on its own stave, rather than placing a second voice on the existing tenor stave.

The original score has the large bold bracket around the original SATB parts, each of which is on its own stave, with the piano outside the bracket (see 'SATB before.jpg').

Following other advice I've found, I press "i" to bring up the instrument panel, select 'vocal', 'tenor' and add it to the score, which now appears to have two tenor parts (see 'SATB during.jpg').

However, when I press OK and go back to the score there is only one tenor stave and the only change appears to have been to move the bass part outside the bracketed vocal parts (see 'SATB after.jpg').

What am I doing wrong?

Hmm... I'm using MuseScore 4.2.1 on Windows 10.

Okay, so when
I press "i" to bring up the instrument panel, select 'vocal', 'tenor' and add it to the score, which now appears to have two tenor parts... and then, when I press OK and go back to the score...
This is what I get:
Tenor_2.mscz

Okay, so I created a score using the "SATB + Piano" template. Added some notes (just repeated scales), saved the file, and exited. With that I should be just where you were to begin with?

Tenor staff 1.mscz

Now, I re-open the file. Open the Instruments tab. I highlight the "Tenor" entry in the list of Instruments. At this point, there is the Add button at the top of the Instruments tab and a button within the now-expanded "Tenor" staff to Add Staff. (Not sure how they will differ, so I'm'a try them both.)

I click the Add button at the top of the Instruments tab. Select Vocals / Tenor, then click the arrow pointing right to move this staff into the list of instruments at the right. This creates a new top-level entry in the Instrument tab, also named "Tenor". I believe because I had selected "Tenor" from the original Instruments tab, it places the new "Tenor" staff immediately after the existing one. I click OK.

This gives me a second "Tenor" staff immediately after the existing "Tenor" staff. The new one is named "Tenor 2" and is joined to the existing one with a thin, square brace, outside of the thick, square brace (with wings) that joins the original four, now five, voice staves. Saved this file under a different name.

This, I believe (?), is just what you want. Tenor staff 2.mscz

So, I said I was going to try both the potential "Add" buttons. So I closed the second and re-opened the first, with the original "SATB + Piano". Selected the existing Tenor staff and clicked the Add Staff button in there. This adds a new entry ("Treble clef 8va bassa") within the Tenor section of the Instrument tab. In the score, the "Tenor" label is applied to two staves, joined by the thin, square brace. Saved this file under a third name.

This might be what you want instead. Tenor staff 3.mscz

I don't understand the difference between these two scores. They are all but identical in appearance, but I assume there is some difference between them. Anyway I've attached them all so you can take a look.

I haven't been able to replicate the behavior you saw. *shrug* So, as underquark said, attach your score so people can look at it and find the problem. (FYI: That's often going to be necessary when you ask for help here.)

Thanks for all the advice - I can only assume there is something going on behind the scenes in the file.
I've attached an example of the score - Example 1.mscz - nice and simple SATB + Piano. The four vocal parts are connected by the thick bracket.

Then I have tried your second method above: Instruments tab, dropdown the "T", select Add stave. On this tab it now looks like a second 'treble clef 8va bassa' has been added. However looking across to the score (see picture 'Example 2') you can see that instead of adding the second tenor stave it seems to have just moved the bass stave outside the bracket. I have also included that score (Example 2.mscz) as well.

Very frustrating when on the same screen you can see that you are adding something on the left hand side and then it's not actually appearing on the right!
