combine empty measures and count the measures.
in a score 1 instrument has 12 measures rest. I want to join these rests into one long combined measure and count that as 12 measures. Now when joining measures MS does not count the measures as more than one.

Basically, simply type the letter 'M' to toggle multi-measure rests on/off.
thank you for your answer.
Note that in the score, it would be very unusual to use multimeasure rests like this. For one thing, it would almost never happen, since some other instrument is presumably not resting. But anyhow, multimeasure rests are normally used in the parts only, and MuseScore does this automatically when you generate parts from your score.

That may be the case, but here I am notating a piece for jazz band, and I want to indicate where there will be an eight-bar trombone solo. I could put eight empty bars, but this is a but ugly. The 'M' command works, but there are places where I don't want this effect, for example where I have empty bars at the end of the score waiting to be worked on.

That's fine, just don't turn on multimeasure rests until you are done. Or, the msot common way of working - leavew them off in the score, on in the parts (which is the default) and do your main note input / editing in the score.
