How to enter small alternate notes in MuseScore 4?

• Jan 28, 2023 - 14:46

I want to enter small alternate notes, a common feature in last-century pop, e.g. as for the syllable "bove" in the vocal line in the attached. In MuseScore 3 there was a "Small" option in the Chord section of the inspector. I haven't found an equivalent in MuseScore 4. I found the small notehead option in properties, but I haven't found a way to shrink a flag, or (what would be better) a note as a whole. Is there a way to do this in MS 4? Thanks!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are trying to do, but this is how I do the small, optional notes for vocalists. I don't have to switch voices at all.

  1. Select the note (or notes) you want to make small
  2. Select the "Properties" panel
  3. Check the box next to "Small notehead"

Optionally, as others have said, you can set the note to not playback, although I usually want to hear it, since I'm writing choral music, and I know at least some of the men and women will sing the optional notes.

  1. You will have to use Shift+{ several times to get a result.
  2. Check that you don't already have a System Break which is forcing a new line.
  3. If there is no System Break, then your only alternative may be to use this formatting option to adjust the Scaling:
Format > Page settings... > Scaling > Stave space (reduce)
