Go to Format>Style
Look for Text Style in the left hand panel of the dialogue. Text Style is right at the bottom!
Click on that and you will see a list of text styles. Select Measure number (or Bar number if you are using UK English like I am) . On the right hand side you can adjust the font size, add a frame if you want, and adjust the x and y offsets. You can see the effects in the score as you do this. Negative x and y offsets are allowed which means the numbers can move to the left of the staves and below the top stave line.

Format / Style / Measure numbers. Check the Measure numbers box at the top, then choose from the options below, one of which is Every system.
I need to put large numbers to the left of each system line, not small measure numbers above the left side of a measure.

I have tried similar approaches, but I will try this. Thanks!
