Accent rhythms in slash notation on voice 3

• Jan 21, 2025 - 18:27

Hello, I'm trying to have voice 3 here show the rhythm that a comping pianist would play the chords to. I want to keep voice 3 in orange here as it is, and completely remove all traces of voice 2, in green. Also, I want voice 1 to look like the second measure which I'm sure I can just flip afterward. How do I remove all traces of voice 2?

You can probably use the Selection Filter to select only Voice 2:

Select the entire score. Then in the Properties panel toggle off the Visible property, to make all Voice 2 elements invisible.

It is a bad idea to use Voices 1 and 3. MuseScore is designed so that Voices 1 and 2 are the preferred setup; only use Voices 3 and 4 if it is actually required (i.e., because both Voices 1 and 2 are full).

"Not necessarily. It is useful is you want the note stems to point the same way. The only restriction is that voice 1 must be present. There is no need to use voice 2 before voice 3."

In fact, we're talking about a specific feature here, "Slash notation". It's poorly documented in the V4 handbook (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/slash-notation) but better in the V3 handbook ( https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tools#toggle-rhythmic-slash-notation)

And so, as written in the Notes, this feature was implemented as follows, I quote: "Slash-notehead notes in voices one or two are fixed to the middle staff line; those in voices three or four are small ("accent" notation) and fixed above or below the staff:

I guess - something close to it (or in a different sequence) - that you had started well (for Voice 3 and the Toogle rhythmic slash notation feature, and after disabling Voice1 in the Selection Filter) - see the GIF below.

Then, it's possible that you were disappointed by the position of the rests in Voice 3 ? This is indeed a known limitation to this feature, it was different but no better with Version 3. In doing so, you tried the "Fill with slashes" feature, and got stuck - the image you attached.

To get rid of this Voice 2, the solution is indeed to continue using the Selection Filter, and uncheck Voice 3 (Voice 1 was already unchecked) to unselect them and thus be able to remove Voice 2 easily.

Now, to position the rests of Voice 3 correctly, do the following:

  • right-click on a rest Voice 3/ Select / More / Tick "Same voice"
  • in the Properties, uncheck "Auto-place"
  • still in the Properties, click tab "Appearance", then modify the vertical offset.

And you've got a nice result!
