Vocal sounds are suddenly dampened - bug? Please help

• Apr 4, 2025 - 10:34

I was using the program with some SATB vocals and suddenly the vocal sounds became very soft, like dampened. It happened first with one voice, then others. Now if I start a new score, all voices are dampened already from the beginning. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the whole program but it didn't help.

It happened after I changed a Treble clef to Treble clef 8va bassa on the Tenor. Now whenever I start a new score, the tenor clef is already changed o 8va bassa from the beginning and is dampened - as are all the other voices too. So there are two errors, first that tenor clef is defaulted to the 8va bassa and secondly that all voices get a dampened sound.

Songs I've already created still have the original correct voice sounds, but any voice added to them - and every voice when creating a new score - have the dampened sound. Very annoying.

How to fix this? I hope there is a simple fix, but it seems like a bug in the program. It is definitely not supposed to happen.

Re-install almost never works for a problem with MuseScore. Instead go to the Help tab and select Revert to factory specifications. Are you using Basic or Muse sounds. Muse voice sounds tend to be a bit quieter than Basic.
As you know the 8va bassa treble clef is the default clef for tenor parts.

I discovered the problem. There was an addon in musehub, called "Muse Choir", that apparently had changed the sounds. The strange thing is that I installed that addon some time ago, and it didn't have any effect, and I forgot it was even there. Then now it suddenly decided to activate itself.

Thanks for the replies, this can be closed now.

Yes, Muse vocals are softer. Anyone who has ever worked with sound (live or computer) knows that sometimes you have to actually adjust things in the mix. It is a fact. Basic and Muse sounds are far from perfect. And voices aren't always as loud as instruments. In live situations, choirs often have to be miked, but not the orchestra. The person in your Github link that was working with Beethoven might have set this up differently to make it work. Yes, you need to boost the vocals some. Then lower the other instruments some. My guess is that he didn't pan his score. Few people do. Also raise the master volume to make up the volume difference. I know You will say you shouldn't have to go to all that trouble. But the fact that we can go to that trouble is at least worth consideration.
