Creating shortcuts
Is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut for a function that doesn't have a shortcut already? Specifically, I would like a shortcut that would change a normal slur (or tie) to a dotted slur (or tie). I use a Macintosh computer and went to preferences; but there doesn't seem to be a way to add a function to the shortcut list. Is there something I am missing or is this just the way it is?

Just the way it is. But to clarify - you can certainly add shortcuts for many functions that don't have shortcuts - *if* they are on the list of commands to which shortcuts *can* be applied. I have applied shortcuts to a number of commands that don't have a shortcut already (break/join beam, add courtesy accidentals, etc). But if it's not on the list, you can't do anything about it.
In 2.0, the custom palettes will be of some help. Perhaps no with respect to keyboard shortcuts in particular, but at least it will be possible to define specific symbols as palette items and apply them more easily.

Mark,
I was afraid I would get that answer, but I thought it was worth giving it a try. I have gotten a lot of help from this forum in the past and often in unexpected ways. Well, I seem to have a lot of dotted slurs in the pieces I am working on and I am getting tired of doing them by mouse. But investigating the possibilities for shortcuts has been very educational. Thanks for your response. Very helpful.

Have you tried multi-selection?
Select a number of slurs (start with just two, to see), then [Ctrl]+right click one of them, choose "Properties" and check "dotted" (I'm quoting from memory as I do not have ver 1.2 at hand right now) and see if all of them become slurred.
It works with several items / properties, but I am not sure it does with slurs / dotted. It would save some mouse operations.

I did try that, but it doesn't seem to work with slurs. (works well with fermatas and dynamic markings, though)

Thanks for bringing this subject up! A shortcut for creating dotted slurs, and also the ability to create multiple dotted slurs at once would both be great additions to MuseScore. I don't know how to make requests, but maybe somebody will see this.
I use dotted slurs all the time while writing out choral music and usually they occur in all 4 voices. I was copying out The First Nowell just before Christmas and there are 40 dotted slurs! It's a real pain to have to open the Slur Properties window 40 times, not to mention the fact that using the mouse that much is a good way to get carpal tunnel syndrome.

FWIW, 2.0 will simply this greatly - you can select all the slurs you want to make dotted then change them all at once in the Inspector.
I was able to create a working shortcut in OS X Mavericks (10.9.5) for MuseScore 2.1 using System Preferences/ Keyboard Shortcuts. In my case I chose the 'Transpose...' menu item. It works. But it certainly would be nice to have custom user shortcuts within the program.

This is a very old thread, so I'm not sure who you are responding to. You can set shortcuts in MuseScore 2.1 itself using the edit->preferences and click the shortcuts tab. You can create a shortcut to transpose in it.
