Like what the title said, I can't play my scores and the synthesizer is disabled. I tried to reset the software, but nothing worked. I checked the soundfont folder and the files are still there. Is there a solution to this problem?
That leaves me with three reasons this may have happend
1) You upgraded windows - version 1709 has been know to cause some people problems
2) you upgraded or added either hardware or software
3) gremlins invaded your computer in the dark of night and reconfigured your system.
Ahhaha -- I've had trouble with gremlins before...
My computer came with Windows 10. I did just install an audio update through hp support assistant yesterday, but Musescore was functioning properly until about 10 am today. Thanks for your help, Mike.
I'm not sure if another program is exclusively using the soundcard; I haven't installed any new software, but I have updated something to do with the soundcard (I think it was a driver update). Mike, you guys seem pretty knowledgeable for just regular users.
Generally speaking, to get help, it is best to ask in the Support forum - far more people will see it than here. When you do, tell what soundfont you see in View / Synthesizer and what settings you see in Edit / Preferences / I/O.

Which OS? If on a Mac, check #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty, if in a Mac and using Bluetooth headset, see #198086: [Mac] No sound via Bluetooth or Airplay

I'm having exactly the same problem, but on a PC. I tried reinstalling Musescore 2, but still the same playback and greyed-out synthesizer problems.

I'm looking for another link I once found if it has never worked.

That didn't work. The entire playback toolbar is still greyed out, along with the word "synthesizer".

One last possibility that I don't know why it would work is https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/m… It has been know to help some windows users.

So does that mean it's working again? or does someone with more knowledge of synthesizer problems need to help?

Oh, sorry. I didn't mean the problem had been solved yet. How do I enlist the help of someone with more synth knowledge?

Someone else will see this and respond. I'm more of a windows person. FYI, almost everyone on these forums are users like you and me.

Is another program grabbing exclusive use of the soundcard?
Try updating the drivers?

Problem solved :) -- just needed to finish a Windows Update. Musescore works great now. Thanks for your help. :)

Since sound occasionally disappeared in this topic, the issue should be completely fixed in cae320e (master) and 596f6c2 (2.2). See #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty for details.
