Can I open a Cakewalk *.wrk file
Is there a way to open a Cakewalk project in MuseScore, <*.wrk>? I don't see that option on the "Open" dialog box, and when I choose the "All Supported Files" option, the browse dialog box does not see any of the .wrk files; so I assume that I cannot. When I created these files in Cakewalk, I guess I could have exported them from Cakewalk as midi files and then opened them in MuseScore. But I had not, and my computer crashed, with the hard drive unrecoverable; I don't have a recovery disk for the Cakewalk software, and Cakewalk is out of business. Am I up a creek now without a paddle? Let my negligence be a lesson to everyone else - don't just back up your document files - back up all of your software as well, because a company may just go out of business!

You could try to find a software that does support those files and export them as MusicXML files or as MIDI files.

I found a program called Sonar X1 that opens cakewalk files with a quick search. You could try that.

Thank you, asherd - I'll give that a try.

I downloaded a trial version of Sonar X1 Producer, and it does open Cakewalk files; so I am halfway there - being able to access those files. But the Sonar X1 options under File->Export do not include an option for exporting midi - the closest option is "Midi Groove Clip" - and it is greyed out. So the second half of my quest, opening these files in MuseScore, I have not attained yet.

XML or MusicXML is a much better format to transport music between programs if this is possible.

OK, I found the answer to the second half - using "Save As" in Sonar X1 rather than "Export" gives me the option of saving the file as a midi file, which MuseScore can open.

Does it give MusicXML, though? As mentioned, this is much better option if at all possible.

It seems it can, see here.
