I am trying to add lyrics to this piece I'm working on, but when I do they sort of lay above the accompaniment. Is there any way to possibly change the distance between the vocal line and the accompaniment line so that doesn't happen?

It should happen automatically so you need to attach your score.
As mentioned, this should happen to some extent by default, but if the accompaniment staff has many notes on ledger lines above it, or chord symbols or other elements well above the staff, there could still be conflicts. In which case, you can use "Extra distance above staff" in "Staff Properties" for the accompaniment to add space score-wide, or a spacer the Breaks & Spacers palette to add it for just a given system.
If you need further assistance, then attaching your score would help indeed.

@Marc, you forgot to mention the space below Lyrics that can be increased also. This seems to be the most likely solution.

I used Style->General->Page and set the top lyric margin to 3 and bottom lyric margin to 6 to avoid any collisions. If there is a system with no lyrics, the staves will still be a normal distance.

I'm glad I read this. It saved me yet another question. Reading these reports are as useful as the handbook itself.

The vast majority of what you read hear is hidden somewhere in the handbook, you just need to know where to find it and, at times, how to put several items together. The cases where the explanation does not exist in the handbook are extremely rare and are usually fixed when found.
