Adding Soundfonts
I have read the handbook section on soundfonts and am looking to find a good soundfont for nylon string guitars. To this end I have seen some possibilities on various websites but I have a couple of queries about trying them:
-
Can a soundfont file have a virus?
-
Can a soundfont be uninstalled from a Windows PC? The handbook says to simply delete it, so are there no registry settings to remove?
Comments
Sound fonts are only data so they cannot contain a virus. To add one, save it in the correct spot. To remove it delete.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Even "only data" files can (and do) contain viruses. Image files are notorious for carying malware. Also, keep in mind that a file downloaded as a soundfont might not necessarily contain a valid soundfont and might not attack MuseScore (unlikely) but some totally unrelated program ...

There is theory and then there is practice. There is no example ever in recorded history of a soundfont file containing a virus, and I expect that will not change in our lifetimes. Even if you downloaded an actual virus file, it would be unable to "attack" anything unless you tried to do something with it other than treat it as a soundfont. If you loaded it into MuseScore, worst that would happen is you'd get an error message that it wasn't a valid soundfont.

I'll run a manual virus scan on any soundfonts that I download and won't try to open them as anything other than soundfonts. Better safe than sorry.
