Timpani roll

I'm sure this is old news to most users here, but why is the Timpani roll playback SO terrible? It sounds like someone hitting a wooden box with a mallet, and has no resonance at all. Is there a way of improving it? I am not a complete klutz, but instructions for downloading other apps/plugins seem rather over-complicated.

How have you been setting up the roll? Depending on the tempo, I usually use the 32nd tremolo marking and never the buzz roll.
