Changing note values

How do I change note values in a completed bar? e.g. from crotchet crotchet to dotted crotchet and quaver
I haven't found a way of it allowing me to make such a change

If you select the first crotchet and press the . key the crotchet will become a dotted crotchet overwriting the first half of the second crotchet leaving it a quaver.

If you have two consecutive crotchets with nothing between them while not in note input mode, you will get the results you want. If you are in most note input modes, you have to enter the note name (a-g) after the duration to get the results and the cursor will be turned on. Another reason it would not work would be that you are in re-pitch mode where you cannot change the duration of a note until you choose a different input mode. The cursor is also visible when you are in re-pitch mode.

Assuming you are in normal mode and not note input mode clicking a single note and then clicking one of the duration buttons or using the equivalent shortcut always works to change the duration. But that doesn't mean you'll get exactly the results you want. Consider, if you have two crotchets and change the first to a dotted crotched, this "eats" part of the next, so you end up either the expected dotted crotchet - quaver pattern. But if you want to reverse the process, clicking the first note and pressing the crotched button will successful turn it into a crotchet, but it will have no effect on the second - it will remain a quaver. Not because MuseScore is being inconsistent, but because it is being consistent - subsequent notes are never affected by a duration change unless necessary. Lengthening a note necessarily shortens the next; shortening a note does not.
