Filling Up A Page

• Mar 12, 2019 - 16:58

So, I've written a piece that I am sending out for some school bands in my area to play, and I'm trying to format it to look like a professional published piece of music. But, not all the parts naturally fill up just two pages, like Id like. I understand fully how to edit each individual page to make it fit, but I don't want some to look bigger or smaller than others; I'm looking for professional uniformity across all the parts, and I struggling to meet all this criteria. Is there an easier way to have all the parts fill up 2 pages completely, and all have the same staff space as well?

Whenever I'm not happy with how a part (or conductor's score even) does not lineup at the end of the page, I insert some system breaks (select a measure and press enter on the main keyboard) to move some measures to the next system. It looks like this is all you would need to do. I did this in the F Horn 1 & 2 part as an example since it's one of the worst looking by default.

Edit: I just noticed the tuba is 3 pages. You can open the part, press ctrl+a then { once to make the part fit on 2 pages, then use the system breaks to improve the layout. If you insist on the other low brass taking up a full 2 pages, you can do the same thing as I did with the horns.

If you want to affect the size of all parts at once, you can open a part and reduce the scaling in page settings and click apply to all parts to make them all smaller so you can have more staves. Using the same idea, you can reduce the Min and Max system distance (MuseScore considers each staff in a part to be a system). I'm trying to think of other settings that will affect the overall layout, but they are few.

If you give me an idea of what would look better I might be able to come up with a better idea. Also, what I did with the horn is only a sample. Putting the system breaks somewhere else might have made the score look better. The problem is that you want 2 page parts, so it's quite difficult for them to no look crowded like they do now. If you were willing to make 3 page parts, it could look much better in my opinion, but I understand your decision.

Well, I don't mind it being a little crowded, as long as the density is maintained across all pages. In particular, I want the distance between each staff to be about the same, and for all of 2 pages to be filled out, basically spread everything out evenly across the pages, while preserving the staff size. Just about every piece of published sheet music I've seen, save for a few, have that kind of format. Sorry if I'm being too particular

If you want the system distances the same, then make the min & max equal to each other. This will, however, leave a ragged bottom margin, which is not what most published music would do - they normally respace the music to avoid that. And this is why the default settings have the max value larger than min, so the systems can be spread out automatically to fill to the bottom of the page.

One thing you can do to help is count the number of systems, divide by the number of pages, decide what you want to do with any remainder, and then add page breaks as you see fit, so the last page doens't end up with way fewer systems than the rest. That's a matter of personal taste, though. Nothing wrong with allow that last page to not be full.
