Files made in 3.0.1 don't open in 2.3.2
This morning at home I downloaded the latest update and worked on some scores. Then I went to work and downloaded the update on my work computer but it won't install - perhaps because it is windows 7?? Then I tried to open the scores I had made at home in the old version of musescore 2.3.2 but they won't open because they are made in a newer version of musescore. Can I backwards save files in 3.0.1 so they can be opened in 2.3.2?

Yes, this is a fact and by design, same thing happened back in the day with MuseScore 2.x score and MuseScore 1.x. Way back: use MusixCML export in 3 and import in 2
Or like here: install MuseScore 3 at work too.
Windows 7 is supported, but it needs to be a 64bit version (for now, see #281539: MuseScore 3 on Windows 32-bit is not available)

Thanks. I'll try that. I have 32 bit windows 7 at work so that is why the update won't install on that computer.

I spent all morning/afternoon working on a new score in V3.0.1 (on Win 7 64 bit machine) but after many difficulties and crashes, I saved the score as XML and it opened fine in 2.3.2, with one minor thing - I had to re-do a couple of tempo changes.

I have a MacBook. Are you saying that 2.0 doesn't update to 3.0? Because I now have both on my computer and can't share files between them. Am I doing something incorrectly or is this by design?

Files made in 2.x can be read in 3.x without problem, although you might have to adjust some layout. Files made in 3.x cannot be read in 2.x, by design. 3.x has new stuff in it that 2.x doesn't understand. That's why it's a different version number. Don't delete your 2.x versions of the files until .... well, for a long time, until you are absolutely certain that the 3.0 version is exactly what you want. I have hundreds of 2.x files, and upgrade to 3.x all the time, and never go back.

Do I have to transfer the 2.x over to 3.x? Before when I did updates, the entire thing updated and left me with only 1 MuseScore, but now I have two of them. I think you're telling me that is the way it's supposed to be, right? Thanks

Versions 2 and 3 can coexist. Scores generated with 3 are saved in a different folder. If I open with 3 a file generated with 2 I can 'Save as' by adding something to the name, e.g. *3x.mscz.
From version 3 I can export as MusixCML (see Jojo comment) and open with V2

You don't have to transfer scores to version 3. You can keep both versions 2 & 3 on your computer so you don't run into problems trying to transfer all of your version 2 scores to version 3. Version 3 is technically not an upgrade from version 2 though it will open version 2 scores.
