Drum noteheads won't change
Trying to change the ride cymbal notehead in the drumset to void with x. I go to edit drumset, Ride Cymbal 1, click edit noteheads, change them all to void with x, apply, OK, but when I click okay either nothing changes or it changes to a regular circle notehead. When I'm adding notes it appears as void with x but as soon as I click to write the note it changes back to regular notehead. If I go back to edit drumset, edit notes is unchecked and it's back to default noteheads. The drumset editor has always been finicky for me, i.e. things don't change when I want them to, or they revert back at random times/if I try to edit something else. Wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if this is a common problem.

Best to attach your score so we can see what is going on. But based on your description, I'd say you're not doing it correctly. You shouldn't be checking "Edit noteheads" or changing the individual heads for the different durations; instead you should just use the "notehead group" to change them all at once.

I've never seen a way to change non-pitched percussion noteheads in the inspector. I've always had to edit the drumset. I've used it, but don't know all of its quirks. It does seem to me that if you change a note head using edit drumset it doesn't update until you force a redraw, like by moving something or adding something to the score.

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, but for me, "notehead group" is greyed out and I cannot change any noteheads whatsoever. I can change noteheads if I check "Edit noteheads," but then it changes all noteheads for that sound. If I create a new drumset entry and give it the custom head that I want, then it doesn't play back the sound that I need.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get the "notehead group" option available? I only need to change the noteheads of the first measure (WITHOUT changing the sound). My system info: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.4.2.9788, revision: 148e43f
Thanks in advance for any help!
Aaron

changed the notehead for battery to smaller in 1st measure only. ( though not sure why you want to do this in general. I can see why the drumset editor won't allow it, Note heads don't track technique but instruments)

I'm not sure what you mean about notehead group not being available. Works fine for me. I right-clicked the staff, Edit Drumset, got the dialog, and the dropdown for "Notehead group" is active for each of the defined notes.
That said, it's not really clear what you mean about changing the noteheads for only one measure, if it's the same sound throughout the same piece, it should normally have the same notehead.

Hi. Thanks so much for your replies!
ramblinj, the "Small" checkbox in the inspector still works. No issues there :)
Marc Sabatella, notehead group works but only by changing all of that notehead across my entire score. Sorry for not being more clear. In the inspector, it is greyed out for some reason. I need the ability to change a single notehead without affecting the sound.
For instance, imagine I have snare drum, rim, neighboring drum, hi-hat, and cowbell represented by different staff positions; but what if each of these can also be backsticked, dead-stroked, air-stroked, behind the back, and more? I use articulations for diddles, accents, rim shots, buzz rolls, open/closed hi-hat, and more. It's even possible to have a note that is simultaneously diddled, backsticked, and on the neighbor's drum. Being able to select cross, plus, or slashed notehead (or more) when needed would be very helpful. Does that make sense?
I did this regularly when writing for drumlines for 10+ years, but those days are so far behind me. Now, I'm updating some of my old music to musescore and hitting this brick wall. I still have no desire to return to Finale (lol), but I figure this HAS to be possible.
Thanks again for trying to help! I sincerely appreciate it. Do you have any other ideas?

I would assume those different techniques produce different sounds, so if playback is important, I'd try to find a soundfont that includes different samples for them.

No, playback is not crucial. If it could just keep the default sound, that would be awesome. Is this possible? For example, to change a single snare notehead?

Sure, just go to the drumset editor, choose an otherwise-unused pitch to represent this note, define it accordingly, and use that note any time you want the alternate appearance.
I have this issue as well. Usually just use the select tool to select all notes of that pitch, and move the note up a step and back down. The noteheads should change once you refresh them like this.

I actually tried this on a drumset with a one line single drum the other day, since there was no note for it to change to, it didn't change note heads until I did something else that forced the redraw, like enter a note on a different staff.

I had a very similar problem with a single line cymbal part. Your clue about forcing it to redraw finally did the trick (after more than an hour of trying EVERYTHING). I actually had to move a rest within the measure (arrow up/down) to force the redraw in several places in my score to get the entire part fixed. Thanks for this.

Moving a rest on the instrument is a trick I also often use to assure that staff is redrawn, but I don't think moving one on that staff is necessary.
