You can adjust note groups in the time signature properties, see: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/time-signatures#time-sig-properties

try clicking on notes in that dialog to break or join beams

I tried clicking on the dialog box but nothing happened, then I tried the first note in the dialog box and nothing happened but when I clicked on the last note it changed. So, I had to start at the end of the notes in the dialog box and click each note going forward. I think I see how it works.

You can do it in any order you want, but it's the beam into the note you are toggling. There is no beam into the first note, that's why nothing happens when you click it. But you can start with the second note and work left to right.
Or, you can download the plugin https://musescore.org/en/project/traditional-vocal-beaming which automatically sets up beaming according to lyrics using the old-style rules I assume you are wanting to follow.
