Editing a single voice in multi-voice score
Hi,
My specific problem is "how would I select the notes in voice 1 so I can raise them an octave (for the portion I want to alter), leaving the other voices unchanged?"
Sorry I couldn't find this in the handbook.

You probably need to uncheck other voices in selection filter, that should allow you selecting any specific voice.
View>selection filter. Then untick the voices you don't want to select. Then select the section where you want the octave shift and ctrl+up or down arrow to make the shift happen.
Either (un)check the corresponding boxes in the selection filter.
Or make use of any of the select→more functions to select things only from a given voice. (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/selection-modes)
Thanks for the replies so far. I have tried the Selection Filter to no avail. I limit it to Voice 1, then select the range (12-ish measures in my case), then Transpose an octave (using Transpose in the Tools menu). What I get is the entire range shifted up an octave (voices 1 , 2 and 4 for me).
When I select the range (click on first note of voice 1, shift-click on last note of voice 1 in the range), everything in that range appears selected (voices 1, 2 and 4 for my case). Should I be selecting the range differently?
Thanks, Dan

I believe there is a terminology problem here. Could you attach your score?
Here is the score. There are numerous arrangements of Carinhoso out there for guitar, in various different keys. This is simply a combo of part one of one and part two of another. Yet another arrangement has the melody an octave higher (relative to the acompaniment) than this, at least up until the first repeat. I would like to try this here, eventually dropping the whole thing a fourth or a fifth after changing the first voice.
So, right now I just want to put the melody (voice 1) of the first 16 measures up one octave (easily! not note by note).
Thanks in advance.

Select the range (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/selection-modes#select-measure-range );
Right click a Voice 1 note->Select->More->Same Voice in Selection;
Ctrl+Up arrow.
It should work.

My suspicions were wrong. I opened the score, opened the filet selector. removed the checks from all of the voices but voice 1, selected all of the measures from the beginning to the first volta and pressed ctrl+up arrow to move voice 1 up an octave. I'm not sure what you are doing wrong.
Things are working now. I updated to the newest version (was using an older MuseScore 3). Now, using the selection filter does the trick. I filter to just voice 1, select the range, and then cmd-up arrow (i'm on Mac) and that raises just what I want up an octave.
This is what people first suggested, but it didn't work (or I was doing it wrong) until I updated.
Thanks for all the help!
PS I didn't use the right click- select more-voice 1 method at all for this to work now.

That option does exist, I use both methods depending upon which I think of first.
