Change default score size view on open

• Apr 18, 2011 - 03:54

I'm curious about the rational of having the default score size just less than a full page on boot and on all loads. It seems to me that a full page would be much better, as right now I always have to scroll if I actually want the last stave.

Not sure what you mean. Maybe you're talking about something like US Letter versus European A4 paper sizes? You should be able to set the default paper size under Edit->Preferences->Score. I have mine set to Letter, and that's exactly what I get when I create new scores.

That is what I am referring to.So, when I open a score I immediately hjave to scroll to see the last staff. I feel this is very inefficient.

It makes much more sense to me to have a full page showing.

Just to start from practical examples, I use MuseScore mainly on two computers:

a) a desktop PC with a (separate) 1280x1024 (5:4) screen
b) a notebook with a 1280x800 (8:5) built-in display (in both cases I use the max available resolution of the LCD unit)

In the first case, I can usually have a full page (assuming an A4 format) with the 75% zoom factor; in the second case, I need something between 50% and 75%. Resolutions higher than the above are possible. So, for your request, a self-adjusting zoom factor would be needed.

In both cases, a zoom factor which shows the full page makes the score difficult to read (for some notes it is unclear if they are ON or BETWEEN staff lines; measure numbers are unreadable) (as an aside: a self-adjusting zoom factor on document open is what, for instance, Acrobat reader does; to my taste, it usually guesses wrong: it shows the full page, but the text is often difficult to read).

So, I prefer a startup zoom factor allowing to easily read the score (I even often use a 150% factor during note entry), regardless of how much of the page fits in the screen; you prefer to start by seeing the full page.

A case for a new Preference?

I have a 15" laptop and generally leave it the way it is most of the time - 100% view, which shows abut half a page but larger enough for me to read. When I get into heavy duty score editing, I often go to higher zoom factor - 125%, etc. I rarely use anything smaller than 100%.

I agree, a user preference sounds good. I'd leave mine right where it is, though.

What would *really* help is the "scroll view" that former Finale users such as myself have come to rely on. I keep thinking that instead of a whole new mode, it could just be a temporary change of the paper size to a very wide but strip just tall enough for one system. A button to toggle between this and the regular paper size for the document, much as we have a concert pitch toggle. I wonder if that would actually work?
