Non-optimal results with "respell pitches"

• Apr 5, 2016 - 19:05

Hello,
when I use "respell pitches" I get almost unreadable results. For example in a piece in A, instead of writing a resolved F Musescore writes E# even though there is no reason for it (no F# in that measure). It uses G## instead of A even though the next note is an A as well and there Musescore actually writes A.
Has this something to do with the fact, that the piece is in G concert and the score is a Bb instrument? Is there any way to make Musescore respell the pitches with a easily readable result?

The question for you is, why are you using "Respell pitches" at all? Is the file original imported from MIDI? Or did you enter the notes spelled incorrectly? Or did you enter it correctly for one key and then changed the key signature and now you want them spelled differently more appropriately for the new key? Or did you just enter pitches with no thought to spelling and now you want MuseScore to think things through for you? The problem is, MuseScore doesn't know any better than I do which of these specific situations has occured, so it really just has to guess.

Realistically, the some of the spellings I see in your example look quite good to me - the E# in particular makes far more harmonic sense than F would (it's the leading tone in F#, which appears to be the key of that passage). I don't understand the double sharps, but again, MuseScore doesn't know why you want things respelled, and I don't know how they start out, so it's a lot of guesswork. I also don't understand the explicit D natural in the first measure. I don't know how it was spelled originally, but when I entered something similar, I didn't get that or the double sharps - just the E#, which again makes more harmonic sense than F so I think it did the right thing. This is using 2.0.3 - what version are you using?

If you attach your actual score (the "before") and explain the reason things are currently spelled as they are and your reason for wanting MuseScore to change the spellings, we can try to explain better what might be going on.

I have gotten pretty good results with transposing the passage in question up or down 1/2 step (select passage and use up or down arrow) and then back to where it was. You will find many of the notes respelled properly, I find.
