Newbie here- trying to connect midi keyboard
Hi there,
Just downloaded and ready to get started. I have my keyboard set up and on and midi cables attached to Mac vis USB. I have OS 10.11.4. I've followed all directions to power things on in order, my garageband recognizes the Midi keyboard. How do I get MuseScore to?
thanks!

'Start MuseScore (this must be done after the keyboard is switched on)'
Check the cable connections in/out
Open (MuseScore) menu item: Edit/Preferences, then what do you see in the I/O tab for MIDI Input?
Regards, and welcome aboard.
EDIT: Also the Note Input tab should have 'Enable MIDI input' checked.

Thanks for your help. It says "Core Midi, USB 2.0- Port 1."

Yep, enable MIDI on note tab is on.
Let's back up a second - what is your indication things are *not* working? Some people expect just be able to play anything they want in real time abnd have it magcially transformed into readable notation, but MuseScore doesn't work that way. Be sure to read up on how note input works in general - you need to be in note input mode, select duration firs,t enter notes one at a time, etc.
So, what specific are you doing, and what happens to indicate there is a problem?

Yes, I understand that. I click on the enable Midi button on the front tab. Then I click on the rest in a measure, click on N, select duration. Then it lets me enter a note with my computer keyboard, but if I press C on my keyboard, nothing happens.

Do you mean the button that displays the tooltip 'Enable MIDI input' when you hover over it with the mouse cursor?
Be advised that the tooltip doesn't change to 'Disable MIDI input' when MIDI input is enabled, so maybe you actually turned it off instead of turning it on. In other words, regardless of the MIDI button's status, the tooltip always states 'Enable MIDI input'.
Also, you mentioned a USB connection to the Mac... does the MIDI keyboard have ports like this?
If so, what kind of MIDI to USB adapter is used?
Finally, what make/model MIDI keyboard?
Regards.

From the OP's earlier comment: "I've followed all directions to power things on in order, my garageband recognizes the Midi keyboard. How do I get MuseScore to?"
It seems from that that the MIDI connection is established, but MS is not recognizing it.

Right! Thanks.

Ha!... and I thought it was the actual guys in the OP's garage band. ;-)
Maybe shut down the garageband app and see what happens.
Regards.

Right, GarageBand recorded the notes I played from the keyboard which leads me to believe the keyboard, cables and adapter all work fine. But it is a Yamaha P-85 and I bought the VicTsing Midi/Usb adapter from amazon. It was cheap. I have tried to record notes with the "enable midi input" button selected and not selected. Could it be something in my main computer audio settings? I also record with a ProSonus audiobox through USB so could the settings for that be confusing MuseScore?
Thanks for your help!

Close all garageband type apps, shut down the computer, try a different usb port for the P85, re-boot, etc.
In MuseScore: menu item Edit/Preferences, does the I/O tab show other choices besides 'Core Midi, USB 2.0- Port 1' for MIDI Input?
Also...
In the Note Input tab, does MIDI Remote Control accept any MIDI keyboard assignments?
Regards.

Hi there, sorry for the weekend delay! Ok, I've restarted, tried both USB ports. The I/O tab gives me the options of Port 1 or Port 2, depending on where I have it but no other choices. I did not have Midi Remote Control clicked before. Now when I click it, it looks like it lets me select the red buttons but not the green? And only one red button at a time? But with that on or off, it is still not picking up any notes when I click on N in the measure, and then hit a note on my keyboard.
Sigh.

I DID IT! Success. After reading through more old posts, realized my cables needed to go in/out, out/in, rather than in/in, out/out. Thanks for your help!
