Open Finale file?
Is it possible for me to open a Finale [.mus] file in MuseScore? I was sent a file by a friend, but I can't find a way to open it. Help?
Thanks!

No, MuseScore can't open that propriatary and undocumented format. But Finale can export to XML and MuseScore can open that. Maybe Finale needs help of the Dolet plugin for exporting XML, I believe this depends on the version of Finale, not sure.

I am pretty sure all versions of Finale from this century at least support MusicXML export directly. Even the free Finale Notepad does. It's Sibelius that required the plugin until more recently.

Were I to download the notepad version of Finale, could I use this to convert to XML?. Then send it to MuseScore?

Yes.

Your free introduction to music notation software
Need to put notes on the printed page? Finale NotePad lets you do just that – and much more – for FREE!
Create orchestrations of up to 8 staves, and enter notes by clicking them into the staff or importing MIDI or MusicXML files. Once your music is in NotePad, you can hear it play back, see it on the printed page, and share it with other NotePad and users of other Finale family music notation software.
***Odd that I would need to import as midi or Musicxml files instead of .mus-to-xml. Plus, the 8-stave maximum will not work for this particular piece.

Thanks all for your advice.
I was able to get a Finale friend to convert this to .xml for me.

You don't have to import MIDI or MusicXML. You can simply laod the MUS file. I've done it many times. Not sure about the 8-staff limit though. It's possible that only applies to newly created scores, but maybe it won't load.

indeed, it depends.
If Finale can't export to xml, one shall add this Dolet plugin
