Creating unusual measure lengths without changing time signature

• May 7, 2016 - 14:14

Hello MuseScore Forum,

I'm currently transcribing a Joe Pass guitar chord melody, where the concept of a traditional measure length doesn't always neatly map to my transcription.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FrNbEnNTpY

If I'm in 4/4 time, I can go to a measure's properties and change the "Actual" settings of the measure duration to, say, 5 beats instead of 4. But, sometimes a measure might last 3 1/2 beats or some other odd duration. In MuseScore, is there a way of creating these unusual measure lengths, without changing the time signature at every measure? I've tried using decimal values for the "Actual" measure length, but that didn't work.

Thanks,
Joe Konior

Hello underquark --

I realize that, for instance, 3 1/2 beats = 7/8. What I DIDN'T realize was that I could change the denominator value of the measure duration, as well as the numerator.

Referring to my attachment: The numerator control is colored white, and allows me to actively change settings. The denominator control, right next to it, is gray. I took this to mean that this option was deactivated and not editable, similar to the "Nominal" values just above them. I see now that this is not the case.

So, thanks for the help, I appreciate it. This problem is resolved.

Welcome aboard...

For changing the denominator value of the measure duration:

I know, once you know about it, it seems obvious.

However...
I do believe you, and others posting in past forums (especially for pickup measures), would find something like this more intuitive, yes?

If you think so, you can make a feature request here:

If needed, feel free to use these images... just as I have used your Measure Properties.jpg

Regards, and good luck with the Joe Pass transcription. :-)

Hello Jm6stringer,

Thanks for the reply, and the warm welcome.

As your second pictures demonstrates, having the numerator and denominator controls (which work in tandem) looking the same would have been more intuitive. Notice how the Repeat Count option is dimmed or "grayed out", denoting an inactive option. This is the way I was looking at the denominator control.

Having said that, many of the other buttons and controls (on this specific window, and throughout MuseScore) are also gray, and I've never thought that I couldn't use them. So, I'm not sure if my concern actually qualifies as a Feature Request.

And thanks for the good luck with the Joe Pass transcription, it's definitely a challenge!

Take care,
Joe Konior
