midi while typing in chord symbols

If I have a midi keyboard connected and have any element in a staff selected, then I can hear the notes from my midi keyboard as a play. But if I have enabled chord symbol entry via Ctrl->K, then I can no longer hear notes I hit on my midi keyboard. I find that I have to actually click on a note in the staff in order to hear notes from my midi keyboard. I find this frustrating because I'm often using the midi keyboard to help me figure out what chord symbol I actually want to type in. My other workaround is to simply use another midi synth outside of musescore for my keyboard. Is there a good deliberate reason why MuseScore's midi synth doesn't function while typing in chord symbols?
