thanks for your advice.

Select the full measure rest, press Ctrl + 3, or go to Notes > Tuplet > Triplet

Hi , thank you for the fast response. I did exactly that and got an odd effect.
I put three half notes in a 4/4 measure - obviously it filled 1.5 measures. I highlighted all three notes and hit CMD-3 and got a triplet as an eight note and two eight rests not three half note triplets. Did I do it incorreclty?
Thanks you again.
Learning to love this program. I used to use Concertware years ago... :-)

You must set the triplet before entering the notes.

xavierjazz is correct. Assuming your time signature is four beats per measure, the complete procedure would be:
Enter a whole note in the measure under consideration.
Press "N" to exit Note Entry mode.
The whole note you just entered should still be colored/selected.
Press Control (Ctrl)+3.
You should now have a half-note as the first note of the triplet, with two rests as the other two triplets. You can replace the rests with notes.
Hope this helps,

DING DING DING... Light bulb went off... select the duration of the note first then hit CMD-3 before entering the note... now it makes sense... the instructions in the handbook makes sense now...
Thank you one and all.
