Voicing Feature for Guitar

Why when I chose the 2nd voicing on the same stave do I have to edit the stem direction? Especially if I'm using a guitar and tab template, I would think there would be no expectation of a 3rd or 4th voice.
BTW, I think it's awesome this software is offered free........you guys do a fantastic job!

No sure to fully understand. Could you elaborate (expected result vs. received result), and by attaching your score.
For now, with the guitar and tab template, I get an expected result, ie Voice 1 with stems up, and Voice 2 with stems down, in the standard staff of course (see image below)
And about the 3rd (stems up) and 4th (stems down) voices : a grand part of the guitar repertoire (polyphonic repertoire, early music or/and contemporary music) simply requires the use of three/four voices.

And the related .mscz file: tab.mscz

When using multiple voices, MuseScore by default stes voices 1 & 3 upstem, 2 & 4 down. So simply choose an appropriate voice when entering notes and the stems directions will be correct. That is, if there are only two voices, use 1 & 2 for upstem and downstem. If there are three or more, it's more complex and situation-dependent, but one approach is to use 1 & 2 for outer voices - upstem and downstem - then enter the other voices using 3 and/or 4, and flipping stems with "X" as necessary.
